What Are PFAS in Drinking Water, and Should You Worry?

PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a family of thousands of synthetic chemicals used since the 1940s in non-stick cookware, food packaging, stain-resistant fabrics, and firefighting foam. They are nicknamed forever chemicals because the carbon-fluorine bond does not break down in the environment or the human body.
In April 2024 the EPA finalized the first federal drinking-water limits for six PFAS compounds, with enforceable Maximum Contaminant Levels of 4.0 parts per trillion for PFOA and PFOS individually. Utilities have until 2029 to comply. The Environmental Working Group's stricter health guideline is 1 part per trillion combined, reflecting newer health research.
Check your utility's annual Consumer Confidence Report for measured PFAS levels. If you are on a private well near a military base, airport, chrome plater, or industrial site, get a certified mail-in test that includes a PFAS panel (typically $300+ on premium tiers).
If your water is flagged for PFAS, the certified at-home removal technologies are: granular activated carbon (whole-house or POU), ion-exchange resin (POU), and reverse osmosis (POU). Standard refrigerator filters and pitcher filters are NOT certified for PFAS unless the box specifically says NSF/ANSI 53 or 58 for PFOA and PFOS reduction.
The most cost-effective setup for most households: a certified RO unit at the kitchen sink (4 to 6 ppt removal to non-detect) plus a whole-house carbon filter for the rest of the home. You do not need to drink RO water everywhere, you need to drink it where you actually drink, cook, and brew coffee.
