How to Remove PFAS From Drinking Water at Home

PFAS, the forever chemicals, have been detected in the drinking water of more than 200 million Americans. In April 2024 the EPA finalized enforceable limits of 4.0 parts per trillion for PFOA and PFOS, with utility compliance required by 2029. What works:

Reverse osmosis (RO). Independent testing consistently shows 94 to 99%+ PFAS removal from RO membranes. NSF/ANSI Standard 58 now includes a specific PFOA/PFOS reduction claim, and certified residential units can take typical levels down to non-detect at the tap. RO is the most reliable PFAS removal method available to a homeowner.

Granular activated carbon (GAC). Effective for most long-chain PFAS (PFOA, PFOS) when sized correctly and changed on schedule. Look for NSF/ANSI 53 certification specifically calling out PFOA/PFOS reduction (not just chlorine). Whole-house GAC systems with PFAS-rated media give you protection at every fixture, which matters because PFAS is also absorbed through skin and inhaled in the shower.

Ion exchange resin. PFAS-specific anion-exchange resins (different from softener resin) are the highest-capacity option per gram of media. Mostly used in point-of-use cartridges and increasingly bundled with carbon in premium under-sink units.

On a private well with confirmed PFAS, or a household with kids, pregnancy, or anyone immunocompromised? Add a whole-house carbon filter with a PFAS-rated media stage in addition to the kitchen RO. PFAS exposure is not just from drinking; showering and bathing are real routes, especially for kids.

Re-test 30 to 60 days after install with a certified mail-in PFAS panel (around $300 to $400). Track results yearly. RO membranes typically last 2 to 4 years; carbon media is replaced on the manufacturer's schedule, not by taste, because PFAS is undetectable to your senses.
